Attitudes of Swinging and Swingers

What used to be regarded as weird, deviant and uncommon has now become popular and common (rogers, 2001). Swingers clubs and swinger sites such as this Swingers Toronto site have popped up all over North America as an exciting new activity for married couples. Swinging is unlike open marriages that promoted non-possessive love and polygamy but rather a non-monogamous sexual activity, much like other social activities, that can be experienced as a couple (bergstrand, 2000).

Swingers who partake in this type of lifestyle usually come together through personal ads, lifestyle magazines, swinger house parties, swinger conventions, and internet websites where promoters promote upcoming events and introduce new couples. According to Jenks (1985) Swingers are more liberal than their non-swinger counterparts. The biggest differences were the issues related to sexual items such as pre-marital sex, birth control, abortion, homosexuality, sex on TV and satisfaction with own sex life. This makes them more eager and less embarrassed to involve themselves. Toni (2009) further states that men are the one who brings up the issue of swinging and the women are the ones who keep the couples involved. The ladies are the people that hold the swingers’ community together says Toni (2009).

Swinging activities typically occur when a married or otherwise committed couple engages in sexual activity with another couple, multiple couples, or a single individual (wiki). Swinging adheres to the claim that it enhances the sexual and emotional relationship between the couple, removing any secrecy or dishonesty that could arise if they were to have an affair (bergstrand, 2000). It removes that deceit and guilt barrier and opens up the level of trust in a couple’s relationship. This philosophy on swinging by the swinging and research community has found that swingers rate their relationships healthier and happier than the norm. It has also been suggested that swinging stabilize relationships, prolong family ties, and enrich the lives of couples.

Despite the many positives swinging gives to swingers, the swinging lifestyle has been hit with controversy and debate. It has been hit both practically for its health dangers and religiously by supposedly defiling the sacred nature of sexual relations between two persons. Swingers have hit back though with full force stating that condoms are required at most swing clubs and parties. Furthermore their religious beliefs towards swinging have two distinctions: sex and love. Swingers differentiate between fun and friendship, and the love and companionship provided by their existing relationship.

However you see it, the swinging lifestyle is becoming more and more prominent and the more you know the better.
